Liza Minnelli was honored at the June 7 “Entertaining Liza” event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. More than $500,000 was raised for RADD (Recording Artists, Actors and Athletes Against Drunk Driving), Project Inform (which provides information on diagnosis and treatment to people with HIV/AIDS) and Virginia Ave. Project (which brings youths 6 to 18 at risk of becoming involved in gangs together with writers, directors and actors to create evenings of theater). Minnelli received a Lifetime Achievement for her work in promoting RADD’s cause. David Saperstein, chairman and chief executive of Metro Networks Inc., was given the 1999 RADD Humanitarian Award. More than 700 people attended, including Jason Alexander, Joe Pesci, Melissa Manchester, Howie Mandel, Jon Lovitz, Michael Feinstein, Taylor Dayne, Dionne Warwick, David Foster, Rob Lowe, Molly Shannon, David Hasselhoff, Martin Landau, George Schlatter and Bernie Brillstein. RADD is a nonprofit organization that uses celebrity power to promote road safety. The event was underwritten by the Gershman Family Foundation.

* A June 10 reception hosted by MTV Networks at Hollygrove Home for Children in Los Angeles, helped launch Hollygrove’s Entertainment Community Council and raised more than $200,000 for the residential care and therapeutic home for abused children. The council is a group of people and companies in the entertainment industry established to donate money annually to Hollygrove and to act as ambassadors to the cause in the industry. Nearly 200 guests attended and toured the campus. The event was co-chaired by volunteer Kathy Freston and her husband, Tom Freston, president of MTV Networks. The Hollygrove Singers entertained guests.

* The Los Angeles Free Clinic Classic IV, held June 7 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, raised more than $180,000 for the clinic. The tournament, underwritten by King World Productions, attracted 124 golfers and was co-chaired by Andy Friendly, David Friendly, Bernie Brillstein and Jack Rapke. The Cedars-Sinai Medical Center team won first place low net; a team from Promoting You Inc. came in second place low net and the Warner Bros. team came in third place low net. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Ken Stovitz from Creative Artists Agency, Brandon Evans from Western International Media Worldwide and Jon Brandler of Warland Investments.

* Jay Leno, an avid car collector, arrived at the 32nd annual Le Cercle Concours d’Elegance June 6 driving his vintage Bugatti and received the Chariots for Charity Car Collector of the Year Award. The classic car club, Le Cercle, in partnership with Hornburg Jaguar and the Westchester/LAX-Marina del Rey Chamber of Commerce, raised $15,000 for United Cerebral Palsy at the car show. Held on Sullivan Field at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, about 200 cars were featured in the show, which featured French cars of the 1920s to the 1950s. Classics from other European countries and the U.S., including Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce, Duesenberg, Bentley, Cadillac, Lincoln and Thunderbird were also featured. In addition to the judging competition there was a vintage costume contest, VIP celebrity luncheon and family activities for the 2,000 or so attendees. Steven Soboroff, president of the Los Angeles Board of Recreation and Park Commissioners and senior advisor to Mayor Richard Riordan, received the Chariots for Charity Humanitarian of the Year Award, and Jim Bunch, president of the Westchester/LAX-Marina del Rey Chamber of Commerce, received the Chariots for Charity Leadership Award. United Cerebral Palsy provides programs and services for people with developmental disabilities.

* “Just Shoot Me’s” Wendie Malick, as well as Beverly Sanders, Marcia Wallace, Marc McClure, David Selby, Carole Cooke, Tom Troupe, producer Jeff Pollack and author Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey were among the 200 guests at the Monte Carlo Night benefiting Women’s Care Cottage June 4. More than $80,000 was raised for the San Fernando Valley homeless shelter for women and children at the Regency Club in Westwood.
