Free Speech
Re “Instructor Not Guilty of Harassment, College Finds,” June 19.
Your article indicates the low level of rhetoric on our college campuses. The instructor’s position of defending someone’s right to speak about oral sex in a speech class is ridiculous. As former chair of the Alabama Civil Liberties Union and as a former U.S. history teacher, I am a staunch defender of 1st Amendment freedoms. However, this is not an issue of defending the right to speak about unpopular issues. This is about a teacher setting a proper tone of decorum in the classroom so that everyone can learn the elements of public speaking.
