Boston Schools to End Racial Busing

A generation after Boston erupted in violence over court-ordered busing to desegregate public schools, the school board voted, 5 to 2, to end busing in the city, where the vast majority of students are minorities. Under a proposal put forth by Supt. Thomas Payzant, race would not be a consideration in deciding which schools children would attend. The school district would evaluate other criteria, namely, the proximity of the child’s home to the school, whether the child has any siblings there and the results of a yearly school choice lottery.
