Working to Fix Trustees’ Mess

* Re “Colleges Get Mixed Grades,” June 29:

The state accreditation commission’s continuation of “warning” status at both colleges in the South Orange County Community College District suggests that, Chancellor Cedric Sampson’s premature damage control aside, the crisis fueled by district trustees persists.

The commission’s harsh assessment of Saddleback College criticizes old-guard union leadership’s resistance to democratic reform and attempts to undercut the state-mandated role of the academic senate.

That same leadership also “represented” faculty at Irvine Valley College, where academic senate officers and faculty were similarly attacked.

Even as the old guard resists official affirmation of recent elections, our newly democratized local works to clean up their mess. Similar dramatic reform of the district board of trustees will have to wait until the 2000 elections.
