* Cecil Feldman; United Way Organizer
Cecil S. Feldman, 82, organizer of the United Way of Los Angeles. Feldman, who lived in La Canada Flintridge for many years, came to the Los Angeles area in 1944 as district director of the Community Chest, forerunner of the United Way organization. In 1952, he advanced to staff director of the annual Community Chest Red Feather fund-raising campaign and by 1960 he was general manager of the Welfare Federation of Los Angeles, the umbrella group for 171 area Community Chest agencies. Two years later, he helped form United Way Inc. of Los Angeles County, which included Community Chest and other, smaller agencies. He was named general manager of the new group in 1963 and a year later was instrumental in getting several chapters of the American Red Cross to join United Way in an annual fund-raising campaign called United Crusade. He resigned in 1966. On July 13 in San Luis Obispo.
* Ed Long; Pilot Held World Record
Ed Long, 83, who held the world record for the most flying hours as a pilot in the history of aviation. Long, who began flying at the age of 17 after a single lesson, spent a total of almost seven years in the air. In September 1989, he broke the world record for flying hours with 53,290--more than six years--of logged flights since May 1933, a record that stands today. The previous record was 52,929 flying hours, set by Max Conrad in 1974, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. At the time of his death, Long had amassed more than 65,000 hours. His job involved checking power lines, and much of his flying was in a Piper Cub at altitudes under 200 feet. On Sunday in Montgomery, Ala.
* Patricia Zipprodt; Costume Designer
Patricia Zipprodt, 74, a Tony Award-winning costume designer. Zipprodt’s work extended to theater, dance, opera, film and television. She studied art when she was young, and she designed costumes for ballet, then created costumes for Broadway shows. She earned her Tonys for “Fiddler on the Roof” in 1964, “Cabaret” in 1966 and “Sweet Charity” in 1985. Her costumes were featured in musicals including “Pippin” in 1972 and “Chicago” in 1975 and such plays as “Brighton Beach Memoirs” and “The Glass Menagerie” both in 1983. She designed costumes for an earlier version of “The Glass Menagerie” for ABC television in 1973. Zipprodt worked on costumes for some films, including “The Graduate” in 1967.
