The average price of a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline in California rose an average of 1.5 cents a gallon last week, to $1.478, up from $1.463 the previous week, the U.S. Department of Energy said. The price in California was higher than the U.S. average of $1.193 a gallon, the agency said. Still, at $1.193, the price of a gallon of gas was the highest since October 1997, according to the department’s weekly survey of 800 filling stations. An agreement by world producers to limit supply and intermittent problems at some California refineries helped lift prices.
