Microbe May Be in Water Supply
A local water utility serving Newbury Park and parts of western Thousand Oaks has warned more than 63,000 customers that there could be a waterborne microscopic organism in their water.
The organism can cause flu-like symptoms, including fever, vomiting and diarrhea.
“I’m not saying in any way that the water’s contaminated,” said Jim McVeigh, director of water quality for the Chula Vista-based California-American Water Co. “I’m saying we can’t be completely sure that it’s not,”
McVeigh said the water company has notified all of its subsidiary companies that the microbe--known as cryptosporidium--may be in the water supply.
But Dale Dean, operations manager for the water company’s Newbury Park facility, said there is no evidence the organism is in the local water.
