Harvard Dean

* Alan Dershowitz’s column concerning the firing of Harvard Divinity School’s Dean Ronald Thiemann (May 24) is intriguing for a couple of reasons. One is his observation that homosexuality, abortion and viewing pornography are not approved of by some critics. Dershowitz apparently believes that these things are acceptable. He is wrong. Then he uses the tired defense that anyone who disapproves of homosexuality is homophobic.

If the official minister of Harvard is gay, then Harvard has come a long way down from where it was in its beginning. It seems to me that a divinity school would be involved in the study of the Bible. If it is, they would see that the three activities mentioned above are condemned as sin. It appears that both Harvard and Dershowitz need to do some soul-searching about their moral values.
