The City Council voted recently to study alternatives to uprooting a Mesa Drive eucalyptus tree believed to be 90 years old. Because the tree rests too close to the roadside, city officials said, its roots have grown underneath the street, causing the pavement to buckle. The council requested that the city engineer look into the feasibility of saving the tree by moving traffic flow away from it. That plan--to be presented at the June 22 council meeting--would sacrifice parking spaces on the other side of the street.
