Master Chorale’s 1999-2000 Season

In its 36th Music Center season, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, conducted by Music Director Paul Salamunovich, will give nine concerts in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, beginning Oct. 24 with two major choral works, Morten Lauridsen’s “Lux Aeterna” and Brahms’ “German” Requiem. Soloists in the Brahms work will be Tamara Matthews and Hakan Hagegard.

“Choral Treasures From Mexico” is the name of the second concert, to be performed Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. by the Coro de la Universidad Veracruzana, a professional guest choir from Xalapa, Mexico. Its program will include music by Carlos Chavez and Blas Galindo, among others.

The Master Chorale will present three holiday performances in December: a “Family Holiday Concert,” Dec. 18 at 2 p.m.; “Home for the Holidays,” Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.; and the popular “Messiah” Sing-Along, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m.

The first L.A. Master Chorale performance in 2000 will be on the eve of St. Valentine’s Day when the ensemble presents “Songs of Love”--music by Argento, Lauridsen, Brahms, Gershwin, Cole Porter and Jerome Kern--Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

“Madrigal Magic,” a program of a cappella music, follows, March 11 at 2 p.m., with works from Monteverdi and Gesualdo, through Debussy, Schoenberg, Barber and Lauridsen, plus the jazz arrangements of Gregg Smith. The concert of April 14 is named “Made in L.A.” and will offer music by Stravinsky, Halsey Stevens, Erich Korngold, Arnold Schoenberg and Elinor Remick Warren, among others.

The Master Chorale’s season ends May 7 at 7:30 p.m. with “Hollywood Goes Classical,” with film highlights.
