Los Angeles-based MacNeal-Schwendler Corp., whose software is used to design cars and spacecraft, said it’s buying MARC Analysis Research Corp. for about $36 million to make software that tests complex designs and materials. Closely held MARC, based in Palo Alto, had $19.4 million in sales last year and has about 150 employees. MacNeal-Schwendler in February fired 70 workers and closed 14 sales offices to cut costs and expand markets. Its sales fell 6% last year to $125 million. MacNeal-Schwendler shares, which have fallen 23% since hitting $7.50 on Jan. 6, were unchanged at $5.56 on the New York Stock Exchange.
