Freshman’s Homers Lead Seminoles

Little-used freshman Ryan Barthelemy hit two home runs and Matt Diaz added a three-run homer in the first as Florida State defeated Auburn, 10-2, Friday night, in the first game of a best-of-three NCAA super-regional series.

Barthelemy, who had only one home run in 70 at-bats, hit a solo home run in the fourth to give Florida State a 4-0 lead. Barthelemy, who also doubled, hit a three-run homer in the seventh.

The Seminoles (52-12) can claim a berth in the College World Series at Omaha, Neb., with another victory today. Auburn (46-18) must win today to force a third game Sunday.

Nick Stocks (12-2) gave up six hits and struck out seven in eight innings. Hayden Gliemmo (13-7) gave up Diaz’s homer before getting an out.

In other super-regionals:

Miami 10, Wake Forest 2--At Coral Gables, Fla., David Gill (11-0) gave up four hits and struck out seven in seven innings for Miami (45-13).

Mike MacDougal (13-3), the Kansas City Royals’ first-round draft pick, took a no-hitter into the fifth, but left after surrendering seven runs on five hits and six walks.

Southwestern Louisiana 12, Rice 8--At Houston, Will Hawkins hit a two-run homer and Steve Feehan a two-run double as Southwestern Louisiana (42-22) used a six-run seventh inning to beat All-American pitcher Mario Ramos (13-2).

Alan Ochsner (6-0) won it in relief of starter Phil Devey.

Alabama 13, Louisiana State 6--At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Erik Smallwood’s two-run homer and Sam Bozanich’s three-run double highlighted a seven-run first inning that carried Alabama (50-14) past Southeastern Conference rival LSU (41-23-1).

LSU starter Brandon Bowe (9-4) failed to retire a batter.

Alabama starter Manny Torres (10-2), on a pitch count after sitting out two weeks with a sore arm, struck out 10 over seven innings.

Texas A&M; 20, Clemson 3--At College Station, Texas, Daylan Holt hit two homers and drove in four runs, pacing a 22-hit attack that carried Texas A&M; (51-15) to a rout of Clemson (41-26).

Kurt Bultman’s homer gave Clemson a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Aggies struck for seven in the bottom of the inning off the Tigers’ Ryan Mottl (4-8). Holt keyed the inning with a three-run homer.

Texas A&M; added seven more runs in the second and led 18-2 after four innings.

Holt hit a solo shot in his second at-bat. His 34th homer broke a Big 12 season record.

Casey Fossum (11-6) went seven innings, striking out six batters and giving up two runs on four hits. He walked two.

Oklahoma State 18, Baylor 11--At Waco, Texas, Billy Gasparino hit a three-run triple and Josh Holliday added a solo homer as Oklahoma State (45-18) scored eight runs with two outs in the seventh inning to beat Baylor (49-14).
