The Santa Paula Elementary School District has received a $453,000 grant to start after-school programs aimed at keeping children safe and on track in their studies.
Santa Paula was the only Ventura County school and one of 53 California schools to receive the “After School Learning and Safe Neighborhood Program” grant from the state Department of Education. More than 200 districts applied for the grants.
The program will focus on academics and literacy, Santa Paula school officials said, but will also include recreational activities. It will be offered at Isbell Middle School and Barbara Webster, Grace Thille, Glen City, Blanchard and McKevett elementary schools.
The Santa Paula Boys & Girls Club, the Santa Paula Health Coalition, the Palmer Drug Abuse Program of Ventura County and the Landon Pediatric Foundation will work with the district to provide programs.
