From Times Wire Reports

President Clinton kicked off a White House campaign designed to erase the stigma of mental illness. “In too many of our hearts,” he said, “mental illness is misunderstood and feared.” The president teamed with Tipper Gore in his weekly radio address as a prelude to Monday’s first White House conference on mental illness. He said the session will seek ways to dispel myths about the mentally ill. Gore, wife of Vice President Al Gore, disclosed recently that she underwent treatment for depression. A longtime advocate for the mentally ill, she played a leading role in organizing the conference.
