National Men’s Health Week is next week, June 14-20.

But it’s not too early to get some of the facts about men and health, courtesy of the National Center for Health Statistics.

Most figures are from 1996, except where noted.

* Number of office visits to physicians: 300 million.

* Number of emergency department visits: 42 million.

* Number of surgical procedures performed: 16 million.

* Number of hospital outpatient department visits: 26 million.

* Number of hospital discharges (inpatient): 12.1 million.

* Leading cause of death: heart disease.

* Number of deaths from prostate cancer: 34,123.

* Most common chronic condition: sinusitis (1995).

* Most common acute condition: influenza (1995).

* Number of outpatient visits for prostate cancer: 2.4 million

* Number of cases of prostate disease reported: 2.6 million (1995).
