Roger Clemens lost a game for the first time in more than a year, Derek Jeter didn’t reach base for the first time all season, and the New York Mets won for the first time in 10 days.

The Mets pounded Clemens for seven runs in 2 2/3 innings, ending his streak of 20 consecutive wins and their own eight-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday night.

“You know eventually you are going to get one in the left column,” beleaguered Met Manager Bobby Valentine said. “But with Clemens pitching, I wasn’t sure if tonight was the night.”

It was indeed as Mike Piazza hit a two-run homer and Al Leiter (5-3) gave up one run and four hits in seven innings. The Mets salvaged the finale of the three-game Subway Series at Yankee Stadium.

Derek Jeter went 0 for 4, failing to reach base for the first time all season. The Yankee star had reached safely in all 53 games this season and 57 straight dating to last year. He was left on deck when the final out was made.

“Everybody’s time comes,” Jeter said. “It was just one of those days.”

Clemens’ streak ends up tied with Rube Marquard for third longest in major league history. Elroy Face won 22 consecutive decisions for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1958-59.

Carl Hubbell has the major league mark of 24, set with the New York Giants in 1936-37.

Clemens (5-1) lost for the first time since May 29, 1998, against Cleveland while pitching for Toronto.
