Register.com said it assigned about 800 Internet domain names, ending the long-standing monopoly held by Network Solutions. New York-based Register.com is the first company to compete directly with Herndon, Va.-based Network Solutions in the business of registering domain names that end in .com, .net and .org. Four other firms were chosen to compete with Network Solutions during an initial test period, and about 30 additional companies will be eligible to compete starting June 24.
