The district attorney’s office is investigating whether a former Monrovia police lieutenant embezzled money from the local police officers’ association, police said Tuesday.

The Police Department had been investigating James Ferris, 48, about another matter when investigators “learned that Ferris may possibly have embezzled several thousand dollars from the Monrovia Police Officers Assn. while serving as treasurer,” police said.

Ferris resigned Feb. 2. Eight days later, the investigation was turned over to the prosecutor’s office, police said.

“The criminal investigation into the possible embezzlement of Police Assn. money is ongoing, and we are working very closely with the district attorney’s office to conduct a thorough investigation,” Monrovia Police Chief Joseph Santoro said in a statement. “The investigation is complex and is still in progress.”

Ferris could not be reached for comment.
