Prosecutors Seek Death for Top Kurd Rebel
Prosecutors Tuesday demanded that Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan be hanged for an armed separatist campaign his guerrillas have vowed to escalate if he is executed.
Ocalan, 50, stands accused of treason and responsibility for the deaths of more than 30,000 Kurdish rebels, Turkish troops and civilians killed since his Kurdistan Workers Party took up arms in 1984.
Judges adjourned the case for 15 days to let Ocalan’s lawyers prepare their summary. A verdict is expected shortly after that in a trial that has moved swiftly.
