Things to do this weekend for your money:

Do a spring cleaning.

It might feel like summer, but the official end of spring isn’t until June 21. Use this weekend to comb your house, attic, garage and storage facilities for items to sell at a yard sale or to donate to a qualified charity.

Check on your charity.

Charitable organizations are now required to give you a copy f their tax returns and tax-exemption applications when you ask--or to post the information on the Internet. Previously, charities were required to let you view the documents, say at their headquarters, but were not required to make copies available. Charities are allowed to charge reasonable fees for copying.

Make some adjustments.

If you owed money to the IRS or state this year, increase your withholding accordingly to avoid penalties. If you got a refund, stop giving the government an interest-free loan. Instead, reduce your withholding and invest the difference. You an get a W-4 withholding form from your company’s human resources department; it includes a work sheet to help figure the proper amount of withholding. For those who do not pay income tax through withholding, Tuesday is the deadline to file stimated taxes on Form 1040-ES.
