Evelyn Lambert; Ojai Volunteer, World Traveler

Evelyn Lambert, community volunteer and world traveler, died at her home in Ojai on Wednesday. She was 81.

Lambert was born April 6, 1918, in New York City. She lived in Eastchester, N.Y. Lambert was the owner and director of Kezar Lake Camp in Maine and director of Ella Fohs Camp in Connecticut. Deborah Schreiber of Ventura, Lambert’s niece, fondly remembered childhood summers at her aunt’s camp.

Lambert moved to Ojai in 1980 and quickly became involved in the community. At the Little House Center in Ojai, she taught Oriental brush painting and belonged to a group named the Mynah Birds. Her group created skits and performed at many Ojai events.

Marlene Spencer, at the Ojai center, said Lambert was community-minded. She helped decorate floats for the Fourth of July parade, made banners for Ojai events and was a good artist always ready to help.

Lambert was an avid traveler who toured the world. Destinations included Tibet, China, Borneo, Outer Mongolia, Turkey and Machu Picchu in Peru.

She was a second generation Theosophist and a member of the Theosophist Society, patron of the Krotona Institute School of Theosophy and a volunteer for the Theosophical Book Assn. for the Blind.

Lambert was preceded in death by her husband, Barnett Lambert.

In addition to niece Deborah Schreiber, Lambert is survived by two sons, Jonathan of Ossining, N.Y., and Howard of Denver; a brother Howard Lewis of Waltham, Mass., and four grandchildren.

Contributions in her name can be made to Help of Ojai, Krotona Institute of Theosophy, or the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Services will be private.

Arrangements are under the direction of McDermott-Crockett Mortuary, Santa Barbara.
