Matt Clement pitched six strong innings for his first home victory Tuesday night as the San Diego Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-1, despite again losing Tony Gwynn to injury.

Gwynn, who made his third start after sitting out 19 games because of a strained left calf, was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the second inning after he felt tightness in the same calf. Gwynn is day to day and is 23 hits shy of becoming the 22nd player to get 3,000 hits.

Clement (2-7) gave up one run and four hits to win in his eighth home start of the season. He is 2-2 in his last four starts.

Chad Ogea (3-5) lasted only three-plus innings, his shortest stint in 14 starts, giving up five runs--four earned--and seven hits. It was also the eighth start this season that Ogea went five innings or fewer.

Ogea gave up his National League-high 18th homer this season, when Damian Jackson connected leading off the fourth to increase the Padres’ lead to 5-1.

Dan Miceli, Carlos Reyes and Carlos Almanzar closed out a six-hitter for the Padres.

San Diego had four hits, two walks and an error for four runs in the second to open the scoring. Quilvio Veras hit a two-run single and Gary Matthews Jr., pinch hitting for Gwynn, walked with the bases loaded.

Jim Leyritz doubled to lead off the inning and scored on George Arias’ double. Jackson drew a one-out walk and Clement reached on a throwing error by Ogea on a sacrifice to load the bases before Veras singled.

Scott Rolen hit his 14th homer, a one-out solo shot in the fourth, for the first hit against Clement.

Ruben Rivera connected off Scott Montgomery in the eighth to increase the Padres’ lead to 6-1.
