Consider Toll on Local Wildlife
* Thank you for your May 19 editorial covering fence repair along the Eastern toll road to ensure the safety of drivers and wildlife.
The fences used in Florida to protect mountain lions and deer are 11 feet tall with a 3-foot barbed wire overhang. They have eliminated road mortality for these species.
Before putting roads through a nature reserve, it seems our elected officials, who approve the projects, should properly research direct mitigation measures and do what is necessary to protect all wildlife.
I am most concerned that those who approved the current toll roads want to complete their destruction by running the continuation of the Foothill toll road near Caspers Wilderness Park, beside yet another wildlife reserve, through an important mountain lion corridor, through the last watershed without channels and dams south of Ventura, and through the habitat of six federally listed endangered species.
