Chapman University professor Kay Roskam has been named president-elect of the American Music Therapy Assn., based in Silver Spring, Md. She begins her five-year presidency in January. Roskam founded the music therapy program at Chapman when she joined the faculty in 1993; she had earlier founded the music therapy program at Cal State Long Beach in the mid-1970s. A native of Wichita, Kan., Roskam is the author of “Feeling the Sound: The Influence of Music on Behavior,” a widely used college textbook.
The AMTA is a 50-year-old organization that represents about 3,600 members worldwide. Music therapists use instruments or the voice to help address physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of adults and children.
