THE SAFETY ZONE: RESTAURANT REPORT

The environmental health division of Orange County’s Health Care Agency performs routine, unannounced inspections of the county’s more than 11,000 restaurants, markets and other food establishments. When conditions violate state law or applicable county and municipal codes, inspectors can issue notices of violation. If inspectors find during an announced recheck that conditions have not been corrected, they can effectively close the business by suspending its health permit. Health permits are reinstated as soon as the situation is corrected. Here is a rundown for May:

* Restaurant: Taiwah Trading (Warehouse), 14371 Euclid St., Garden Grove.

Dates closed: May 10-11.

Reasons cited: Massive vermin activity.

* Restaurant: La Fiesta Bakery, 1150 N. Harbor Blvd., Anaheim.

Dates closed: May 10-11.

Reasons cited: Operating without a health permit.

* Restaurant: China Bistro, 30832 Coast Hwy., Laguna Beach.

Dates closed: May 11-12.

Reasons cited: Sewage overflow; major sanitation violations; infestation of mice.

* Restaurant: Pho 86, 14576 Brookhurst St., Westminster.

Dates closed: May 11-14.

Reasons cited: Heavy cockroach infestation throughout the food preparation areas.

* Restaurant: Chevron (Market), 23022 Aliso Creek Rd., Aliso Viejo.

Dates closed: May 13-14.

Reasons cited: No hot water.

* Restaurant: Foothill Ranch Auto Spa, 19232 Alton Pkwy., Foothill Ranch.

Date closed: May 13. Reopened the same day.

Reasons cited: Dead rodents found on glue traps; heavy accumulation of rodent droppings in storage, display and cabinet areas.

* Restaurant: Cafe Anh, 13121 Westminster Ave., Garden Grove.

Dates closed: May 14. Not reopened as of June 2.

Reasons cited: Remodeling without permits; no health permit; hazardous flooring.

* Restaurant: Ciao, 223 Marine Ave., Balboa Island.

Dates closed: May 19-20.

Reasons cited: Failure to comply with Notice of Violation of April 26, missing attendance ofoffice hearing; rodent droppings; damaged floor; cleaning issues.

* Restaurant: Phuoc Loc Tho, 9200 Bolsa Ave., #301, Westminster.

Dates closed: May 24. Not reopened as of June 1.

Reasons cited: Failure to comply with Notice of Violation of May 18; Health Permit revoked; rodent (rat) droppings found on ceiling tiles over kitchen; insufficient cleaning of food equipment and kitchen floors.

* Restaurant: Taste of New York, 1981 N. Tustin Ave., Orange.

Dates closed: May 24-25.

Reasons cited: Sewage back-up in the main kitchen.

* Restaurant: Kokomo’s Pizza Plus, 33495 Del Obispo St., Dana Point.

Dates closed: May 26. Not reopened as of June 1.

Reasons cited: Major remodel in progress; no hot water; no storeroom; walls, floors and ceilings in extreme disrepair.

* Restaurant: El Gallo De Oro, 610 E. First St., Santa Ana.

Dates closed: May 26-27.

Reasons cited: No electricity in the facility.

* Restaurant: The Fraternity House, 8112 Garden Grove Blvd., Garden Grove.

Dates closed: May 27-28.

Reasons cited: No hot water.

* Restaurant: Manila Peninsula, 105 N. State College Blvd. Orange.

Dates closed: May 27-28.

Reasons cited: Heavy cockroach and mouse infestation throughout the facility; broken dishwasher.

* Restaurant: El Taco, 615 N. Euclid Ave., Anaheim.

Date closed: May 28. Reopened the same day.

Reasons cited: No hot water.
