Teens Take the Stage in ‘The Shattered Mirror’

After two months of intense rehearsals, a group of teens culled mostly from Juvenile Court and continuation schools will take to the stage for performances of “The Shattered Mirror.”

The play, which runs through Sunday, was commissioned by L.A. Theatre Works’ Arts and Children Project and written by Jose Guillermo Garcia, a playwright from New Mexico.

“The Shattered Mirror” is the story of a Latina from the inner city who is visited by Anne Frank and discovers she is the incarnation of Anne’s imaginary pen pal, Kitty. She posts a letter on the Internet expressing her isolation and anger, with surprising results.

The bold play is intensely visual--with sets designed by the teens who worked with professional stage designers--and also includes dance and music. Remaining performances will be at the Madrid Theatre at 21622 Sherman Way in Canoga Park today at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
