A Day to Bask in Their Tech Glory

As the saying goes, every dog has its day, and the same is true for technology professionals.

Oct. 5 has been designated “Techies Day” by a collection of high-tech organizations that seek to boost public understanding of the role technology plays in the economy and society. Tech workers plan to celebrate by visiting classrooms and encouraging students to study math and science and consider high-tech careers.

“We think part of the reason there’s such a shortage of technology professionals may be that their overall contributions are too often overlooked,” said Doug Berg, who launched a coordinating Web site at https://www.techies.com.

The Techies Day initiative was announced last week at PC Expo in New York and the National Education Computing Conference in Atlantic City. Organizers hope to make it an annual event.
