Re “Ex-Lover Gives Explanation for Altering Cisneros Tapes,” June 23: The case against Henry Cisneros, created by his former mistress and her secretly taped conversations with him, hinges on the credibility of these tapes, now proven to be altered. The editing was done on the advice of lawyers because the full conversations could be “legally troublesome,” a euphemism for self-incrimination.

The proliferation of eavesdropping devices in our society is obviously wide open for horrific abuse. For every bad baby-sitter revealed, how many people are being harassed and framed by jealous ex-lovers, or co-workers out to avenge some perceived slight, or subordinates covetous of their superior’s office? Close the spy shops and bring privacy and liberty back to American society.
