Stars, Spaceship May Relate to Spiritual Journey

Dear Cynthia: In my dream, my husband and I go out on our patio to watch shooting stars. I watch the bright tail of a star stream downward from the sky--and suddenly enter my husband’s stomach! I scream out: “John!” I’m afraid to look at his body. When he doesn’t answer, I look at his face--and he has the most peaceful expression I’ve ever seen.

I then look up and see a spaceship with several smaller ships latching on in a circular formation.

I find a group of people gathered on a porch. I join them and look up to see the most spectacular view: bright streaks scattered on the dark sky. I try to comment on the beauty. But all the people are oblivious to this fantastic view and seem just to continue with their business.

Dear Reader: Stars light the heavens and are associated with luck. If you wish on a star, they say, your wish will come true. Spotting a shooting star is even more special. The stomach, meanwhile, is where we digest and begin to assimilate that which we take into our bodies. It also is associated with emotion (a “gut feeling”).

In your dream, your husband may represent the masculine part of you, the provider / protector aspects. But I feel that the dream speaks more to your partnership with John. When he “takes in” his lucky wish, you are fearful--afraid, perhaps, that if he gets his most fervent wish, it will compromise or change your relationship. But he looks uncommonly peaceful.

Spaceships in dreams represent a spiritual journey or the mystery of the unknown. (Carl Jung and others have referred to spaceships as modern symbols of angels.) But the image of spaceships circling also is reminiscent of covered wagons circling to protect the inhabitants against attack from enemies--another indication that you may fear your husband’s spiritual quest as a threat to your marriage.

Still, when you gather with others and only you can see the beauty in the sky, it would seem to indicate that you have a deep appreciation for spiritual beauty but don’t have many people with whom you can share it. You view your husband (who is not among the oblivious people on the porch) as one who embodies spirituality, as one who does understand and shares your vision. True, there are things about this aspect of him that can frighten you. But it is significant that your fears at seeing the star enter his stomach seem to be allayed by the peaceful look you find on his face.

Perhaps you’re having thoughts of John completing his life here on Earth and being taken to the heavens. If so, you are not alone. Every loving partner has wondered how he or she could go on alone. But time spent dwelling on this is just a waste of the time you have together. We can all take a lesson from your dream and appreciate every magical moment shared with those we love.
