GeoCities Staff Braces for Word
GeoCities employees in Marina del Rey are expecting to get an update about the company’s pending merger with Yahoo next Monday, including information about how many jobs will be eliminated or transferred to Yahoo’s headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif. The $3.9-billion deal, announced in January, is on track to close by early June. GeoCities spokesman Bruce Zanca said the company could not comment on possible layoffs or job relocations because it is in a quiet period.
A GeoCities proxy statement filed Feb. 25 with the Securities and Exchange Commission said 133 of the company’s 281 full-time workers are in operations and support, an area where there will probably be overlap with Yahoo. Two other areas that may be cut back to eliminate duplication are marketing and sales, which employs 70 people, and finance and administration, which employs 38.
