Half of Carjacking Attempts Successful

Just over half the nation’s annual average of nearly 49,000 carjacking attempts are successful, and almost two-thirds of the crimes occur within five miles of the owners’ homes, the Justice Department said. Using data for 1992 through 1996, the most recent available, the Bureau of Justice Statistics said each year, of an average 48,787 carjacking attempts, 24,520, or 50.3%, succeed.
