U.S. Atty. Gen. Janet Reno’s top deputy angrily brushed off criticism Thursday that Reno’s planned investigation of independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr is politically motivated.

“That is a bunch of crap,” Deputy Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. said. Asked to elaborate, Holder said: “That’s C-R-A-P.”

Holder was responding to comments a day earlier from one of Starr’s former prosecutors, who said the Justice Department seemed to get serious about investigating Starr’s alleged misdeeds only when the independent counsel’s own investigation edged close to President Clinton.

“It seems the closer we get to the president . . . they have all of a sudden insisted on conducting a very intrusive investigation into the heart of what we have been doing” in the Monica S. Lewinsky matter, former Starr deputy Robert Bittman said Wednesday on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Bittman and others have questioned whether the Justice Department can be impartial about Starr.
