Professors to Discuss Political Ideologies
A panel of professors will discuss the political ideologies between World War I and World War II on Monday at Cal Lutheran University.
The discussion, titled “Sometimes You Have to Look Behind to See Ahead,” will use eight classic American films as its foundation. The films include “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” “Magnificent Ambersons,” “Gabriel Over the White House,” “Citizen Kane,” “Casablanca,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Daily Bread” and “The Fountainhead.”
Beverly Merrill Kelley, a professor of communication arts at Cal Lutheran, will lead the discussion from 10 to 11 a.m. in the school’s Nelson Room. Kelley recently published the book “Reelpolitik: Political Ideologies in ‘30s and ‘40s Films.”
Joining Kelley in the discussion will be Herbert Gooch, a professor of political science at Cal Lutheran; Jack Pitney of Claremont McKenna College’s government department; and Craig Smith of Cal State Long Beach’s department of speech communication.
The event is part of the school’s Colloquium of Scholars lecture series. Admission is free.
