Janet Reno

* Re your March 8 article about Atty. Gen. Janet Reno, I say hurrah! Good for her. For over a year two-thirds of the Americans have been wondering why she didn’t dismiss independent counsel Kenneth Starr. He’s spent so much taxpayer money. He dwelt on stupid, inconsequential things--those that were sordid and despicable. It got our attention, but soon we became nauseated.

Starr is the epitome of Joe McCarthyism; given a little more time, he could outdo McCarthy. It’s time we either put limitations on the independent counsels or do away with them completely, to stop any future fiascos. I understand he is continuing with his investigations of several people.

Your March 9 article said Starr intends to counter the offensive, but only when he is ready. I say kudos to the attorney general; the lady has guts!

Mark Levin and his cronies in the judiciary are claiming that an investigation of Starr would be politically motivated. After years of watching what was obviously a partisan attempt to “get” Bill Clinton for something (anything), one practically chokes on the irony of that claim.

Just why, moreover, are Levin and his organization [Landmark Legal Foundation] meddling in a federal judicial process?

Re Michael Ramirez’s March 10 cartoon, “The Saturday Night Massacre, the Sequel”: The only thing that surpasses the disgusting actions of Bill Clinton is the vicious investigative tactics of Starr. If you love the “old” IRS and its tactics, then you have to love the investigative methods of Starr. They are one and the same.

So Clinton wishes Monica Lewinsky well (March 6)--how very kind of him. While I do not sympathize with Lewinsky, how our president has the nerve to state that if he does and says the right thing, then that’s best for him and his family and the American people. He has betrayed his family, and he has constantly lied to the American people. He is still in denial about everything he has done. What a hypocrite!

Let’s face it. If Linda Tripp hadn’t betrayed Lewinsky, Lewinsky wouldn’t be making more money this year than most people make in their whole lives.
