2 Officials Held After Trying to Join Parade
State Sen. Tom Duane and New York City Councilwoman Christine Quinn, both openly gay Democrats representing Manhattan, were among six people arrested after they attempted to join a St. Patrick’s Day parade as part of a gay contingent. They were issued summonses and released. Gay groups have fought unsuccessfully for years to join New York’s main St. Patrick’s Day parade under banners proclaiming their sexuality. The parade in the Bronx was a precursor to Wednesday’s main event on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, one of the city’s largest public events.
