Police Department to Take Over Boxing Club

Share

The Huntington Park Police Department has agreed to take over the city’s troubled youth boxing club but funding for the program is still uncertain.

The City Council voted Monday against renewing a $40,000 federal grant for the program, which serves about 120 boys and girls. The gym’s current grant runs out June 30.

The council cannot fund the program because gym operators have failed to register with the state as a nonprofit organization, a requirement to accept federal money.

Officials learned about the club’s nonprofit status during an investigation of possible campaign activities at the gym.

The council instructed the Police Department to take over the program under the city’s Police Activities League. But the council did not allocate extra funding for the Police Department to run the program.

Police Chief Randy Narramore said the boxing club’s nonprofit status would be provided through the league program. He said he hopes to raise money for the gym’s staffing and equipment through private donations and fund-raisers.
