Ombudsman Program for Elderly

Re “Our Elderly Deserve Better,” editorial, March 11.

One of the most effective programs that advocates for the frail elderly in long-term residential care is the Ombudsman Program. Trained volunteers visit such facilities regularly to assure that all residents are receiving proper care.

The ombudsman program is woefully underfunded. Gov. Gray Davis is dragging his feet; we do not yet have a new director for the Department of Aging, let alone a new state ombudsman. At the very least, the program should be funded to let us fulfill our mandate.
