Workers’ Pasts

Share

As an employee with a “dark past,” I read with interest the March 10 article on the hiring of employees who have criminal records. I spent about 15 years as a substance abuser, which contributed to my being arrested and convicted of a felony. I have put it behind me and have been gainfully employed for the past several years. My employer knows about my past, and I agree with the article that it is a hindrance to my upward mobility.

I wish I could convince everyone who is engaged in substance abuse, especially young people, that it is a one-way ticket to nowhere. But, if one is willing to seek help and to be responsible for helping oneself, then all things are possible, no matter how hopeless the situation appears. I am living proof that the most horrible of life’s situations can be reversed with the proper guidance and perseverance.
