Authorities to Deliver a Sobering Message

Sheriff’s deputies will stage a traffic crash during an event at Cal Lutheran University today to give students a dose of reality about what can happen when people drink and drive.

The 1999 Safe and Sober Graduation demonstration kicks off a weeklong campaign on campus against drunk driving.

During the event, law enforcement officials also will talk about other possible consequences of drinking and driving, said Ventura County Sheriff’s Sgt. Randy Pentis.

More than 200 students are expected to attend the 10 a.m. presentation, he said. The public is invited.

Since the start of the sheriff’s graduation program in 1996, there have been no alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Thousand Oaks involving local college or high school students, Pentis said.

The event also will include school officials, county firefighters and employees of the ambulance company American Medical Response.
