Television ratings guru Nielsen Media Research is teaming up with Milpitas-based NetRatings to offer a new Internet measurement service that will compete with industry leader Media Metrix. The new service, called Nielsen/NetRatings, tracks 9,000 Web users as they jump from site to site, navigate within a site and are exposed to banner ads. The companies will use the data they collect to help advertisers target specific audiences, a function important to the development of electronic commerce. New York-based Media Metrix uses a similar methodology to track 40,000 Web users. The inaugural report from Nielsen/NetRatings about Web usage in February closely tracks Media Metrix’s most recent report from January.
