Services Mark Holy Week and Passover

Following is a sampling of services around the county marking Holy Week, which is celebrated by most Christian churches from Palm Sunday through Easter, and the Jewish celebration of Passover, which begins at sundown Wednesday and runs through April 8.

Among some of the larger services:

* The Rev. Tod D. Brown, Catholic bishop of Orange, will bless palms and celebrate Mass at 11:15 a.m. Sunday at Holy Family Cathedral. An evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper will take place at 7 p.m. Maundy Thursday. On Good Friday, the church will observe the Stations of the Cross at noon, followed by the celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 1:15 p.m. An Easter vigil will take place at 8 p.m. next Saturday. * The Rev. Robert Schuller will give the message “Live in the Center of Divine Love--for Evermore” at 6, 8, 9, 10 and 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Easter Sunday at the Crystal Cathedral. * Mariners Church will offer Good Friday services at 4, 5:30 and 7 p.m. There will be music, dance, communion and meditation. Easter services will take place at 5 and 7 p.m. April 3 and at 8, 9:45 and 11:30 a.m. Easter Sunday. The Easter Choir will perform. The church is at 5001 Newport Coast Drive, Irvine. (949) 854-7600.

Christian churches--general

Calvary Chapel of Fullerton will have a worship and outreach service at 2 p.m. Good Friday. The church is at 11 E. Walnut Ave., Fullerton. (714) 879-3314.

Calvary Church of Santa Ana will present the musical I.M.A.G.E. at 6 p.m. Palm Sunday. Pastor David J. Mitchell will speak on “Making the Point of Palm Sunday” at 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. Mitchell will preach on “From Darkness to Light” at 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday. The church is at 1010 N. The Catholic Worker will serve brunch for the homeless at 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday. Mass will take place at 1:30 p.m. The group needs money, hams, frozen turkeys, coffee, clothing and volunteers. The Catholic Worker is at 316 Cypress Drive, Santa Ana. (714) 835-6304.

Center for Creative and Conscious Living--a United Religious Science member church--will have its Easter Sunday celebration services at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Children’s church will be at 9:30, followed by an egg hunt. Church of the Living God and Armor of Light Productions will present the second annual Live Drive Through Stages of the Cross from 5 to 10 p.m. today and Sunday. Guests can drive their cars through to see Bible scenes performed. The church is at 826 W. Katella Ave., Orange. (714) 532-6525.

Pastor Rod Schorr will speak on “Following at a Distance” at 9 and 11 a.m. Palm Sunday at Covenant Community Church. A “Last Supper Communion “ service will take place at 7 p.m. Maundy Thursday.

First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Garden Grove will have a Palm Sunday service at 10 a.m. Maundy Thursday services will be at 7 p.m. Easter Sunday services will take place at 7:15 and 10 a.m. There will be a continental breakfast at 8:15 a.m. and Sunday school at 9 a.m. The church is at 11231 Chapman Ave., Garden Grove. A Fountain of Living Water Church will present a Christian Seder to commemorate Passover and the Last Supper at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Reservations required. A freewill offering will be taken.

On Good Friday, the church will hold a Service of Shadows at 7 p.m.

There will be a community sunrise service on the front lawn, followed by a continental breakfast. The choir will present the Easter cantata “For God So Loved the World” during the 9:45 a.m. worship service. The church is at 8111 Walker St., La Palma. (714) 826-3956.

Neighborhood Congregational Church will host a Christian Seder at 6:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday. On Good Friday, the sanctuary will be open for individual prayer and meditation from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Rev. Tari Lennon will speak on “Jesus: The Christ” at 10 a.m. Easter Sunday. St. Alban’s Church will celebrate Holy Communion during services at 8 and 11:45 a.m. Palm Sunday and at 7:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday. On Good Friday, the services commemorating the last three hours of the savior’s life on Earth will take place from noon to 3 p.m. A communion service will take place at 11:45 a.m. Easter Sunday. Presbyterian churches

The Rev. Ed Ewart will continue his “Growing Habits of the Heart” series with the message “Walking Your Talk” at 9 and 10:30 a.m. Palm Sunday at Geneva Presbyterian Church of Laguna Hills. There will be a Maundy Thursday Tennebrae service at 7:30 p.m. The sanctuary will be open from noon to 2 p.m. Good Friday. The Placentia Presbyterian Church Celebration Choir will perform “Calvary’s Love” at 10:15 a.m. Palm Sunday.

St. Peter’s-by-the-Sea Presbyterian Church will have Palm Sunday services at 8:30 and 10 a.m. On Maundy Thursday, there will be a Seder meal at 6 p.m. and a Tenebrae at 7:30 p.m. The sanctuary will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Good Friday. An Easter sunrise service will take place at 6:30 a.m. at Bolsa Chica State Beach (Warner Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway). Additional Easter Sunday services will be at 8:30 and 10 a.m.

United Methodist churches

At the United Methodist Church of Garden Grove, an Easter sunrise service will be offered at 6:30 a.m. in the amphitheater. Another service will be at 9:30 a.m. The church is at 12741 Main St. (714) 534-1070.

First United Methodist Church of Orange will have an Easter sunrise service at 6 a.m. Additional Easter services will be at 8 and 10 a.m. The church is at 161 S. Orange St., Orange. (714) 532-6363.

The Aldersgate Chorale, with Anne Geib on pipe organ, will present “A Service of Darkness” at 7 p.m. Maundy Thursday at Fullerton First United Methodist Church. The drama will focus on the seven last words of Christ. The church is at 114 N. Pomona Ave., Fullerton. (714) 871-4115.

Emmanuel Episcopal Church will offer “Procession of Palms” services at 8:15 and 10 a.m. Palm Sunday. There will be a Seder--Eucharist service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Passover celebrations

The Chabad Chai Center will offer a morning minyan service at 7 a.m., then a Maariv service at 6:30 p.m. There will be a Passover service at 10 a.m. and Seder at 7 p.m. Thursday. Additional Passover services will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday, 10 a.m. next Wednesday and 10 and 11 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. next Thursday. Congregation B’nai Israel will commemorate Passover with a Fast of the Firstborn beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
