Club Plants New Sod at Surfers Point

Surfers Point has about 7,000 square feet of new sod thanks to a local windsurfing club, the Ventura County Fair board and the city of Ventura.

About 15 members of the Full Sail Windsurfing Club took time off work Friday to plant the grass, which was provided at a discount by Pacific Sod. The fair board has agreed to irrigate and maintain the expanded grassy area.

The sod covers a plot that was previously dirt and ivy.

“Sprinklers would come on and turn it into mud,” said club founder Mike Veseth. “It was just ugly as heck.”

Because the windsurfing club’s members are almost daily visitors to Surfers Point, the group decided to adopt the area near Seaside Park. Every other month, the group cleans up the beach and is working on other improvements with the city and fair board.

“Rather than just complain about how things have gotten, we’re just trying to do something about it,” Veseth said.

The 2-year-old windsurfing club has more than 100 members.
