Landfill Expansion

Sue Fox’s article (“Expansion of Landfill Has Its Neighbors Crying Foul,” March 7), though accurate and fair, fails to mention one important fact regarding the upcoming City Council meeting: The City Council has no choice but to approve the Sunshine Canyon dump expansion.

A prior agreement with Browning-Ferris Industries says that if the City Council fails to approve expansion onto the old dump site, the city will be barred from using this dump altogether. With this threat hanging over them, you can bet concerns of health, safety, dust and increased traffic, with its noise and pollutants, will take a back seat to the reality that they have limited alternate sites on which to dump.

I could be wrong but it doesn’t sound like a fair fight to me.
