UCI Wins Men’s Tennis Tournament
The UC Irvine men’s tennis team, ranked 41st in the nation, edged 48th-ranked Alabama Birmingham, 4-3, to win the championship of the UCI Sheraton Newport Beach Classic at UCI Sunday.
After losing the doubles point, UCI picked up victories from No. 4 Chris Ma, No. 5 Chris Chung and No. 6 Stefan Pongratz. With the score tied at 3-3, Anteater senior Thomas Bohun upset No. 42 Martin Woisetschlager, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 1 singles for the victory and the team title. Bohun is 13-1 this season.
UC Irvine (13-1) has won the tournament eight times in 20 years.
In nonconference softball:
Hawaii 4-0, Cal State Fullerton 2-8--Stacy Pierson, Nikki Hart and Monica Lucatego each had three hits as Cal State Fullerton pounded Hawaii in the second game.
Jana Oetgen (9-4) got victory for Fullerton, pitching all six innings of the mercy-rule game. Stephenie Little hit her 12th home run of the season in the fifth inning.
Hawaii won the opener behind the complete game of Kelly Gentle (10-7). The Rainbow Wahine are 21-15. Fullerton is 19-14.
