A bomb was found and disarmed in a downtown bus station Monday, a day after a man was arrested in a motel across the street and charged with making explosive devices.

The device found at the Greyhound bus station at midday Monday was defused by the Las Vegas Fire Department bomb squad after nearly four tense hours, during which four blocks of downtown’s Main Street were blocked off.

The scene was similar to Sunday’s events, when police arrested Frank Alexander, a native of San Antonio, as he talked on the phone to a mental health facility about making explosives.

Officers searched his room at the Budget Inn and found enough materials to make eight explosive devices, said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Lt. Richard Alba. He declined to identify the materials.

About 200 people in small motels and businesses in the area were evacuated Sunday, then were evacuated again Monday when police learned that Alexander might have tried to ship an explosive device at the bus station.

Bomb squad members located the package in the depot’s package area.
