Single Citizenship

Share

As the offspring of an immigrant mother and immigrant paternal grandparents, I must take exception to the lesson Agustin Gurza (March 23) would teach new Americans. He looks forward to the day when he might demonstrate his dual allegiances by voting in the elections of two nations. I look forward to the day when Americans can enjoy the full benefits of their single citizenship.

The very notion of divided loyalties is oxymoronic. Despite the Israeli law of return and the generous offer of citizenship by post-Franco Spain, I proudly remain an unhyphenated American. Unequivocal commitment allows a full measure of patriotic devotion, and unapologetic criticism of perceived national failings.
