Irbe Signs to Stay With Carolina

The Carolina Hurricanes signed goaltender Arturs Irbe to a multiyear contract, the team said.

Terms were not disclosed Tuesday, but the News & Record of Greensboro, N.C., reported this week that Irbe, 31, earlier rejected a four-year proposal that started with a $2-million annual salary. Irbe would have become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

The Philadelphia Flyers re-signed all-star defenseman Eric Desjardins, 29, to a new four-year contract, preventing him from becoming an unrestricted free agent after next season. The contract could be worth as much as $16 million, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The Washington Capitals signed free-agent center Jeff Halpern, 22, the third-leading career scorer at Princeton.
