Arizonan Fined $3,200 for Killing Rare Condor
An Arizona man has been fined $3,200 for shooting a California condor last month in the Grand Canyon.
Ronald Owens, 24, also received a year of probation after pleading guilty to killing an endangered species and possessing and discharging a firearm in a national park. He faced up to a year’s imprisonment and a $100,000 fine.
U.S. Magistrate Stephen Verkamp on Thursday also ordered Owens to turn in the handgun used to shoot the condor. Owens’ probation includes 200 hours of community service to be directed by park officials.
The 4-year-old female condor was among 20 released in 1996 at the Vermilion Cliffs near the Grand Canyon as part of a reintroduction program.
