Museum for Planner of Pearl Harbor Attack

A $1.4-million museum dedicated to the Japanese admiral who planned the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in World War II has opened in Nagaoka, northern Japan.

Isoroku Yamamoto argued against war with the United States, but once he decided there was no alternative, he masterminded the surprise attack, which devastated the U.S. Pacific fleet and propelled America into the war. “We think he wanted peace,” said Nagaoka resident Shinichi Hara, who gathered private donations for the museum.

In March, Japan opened its first national museum, in Tokyo, dedicated to World War II, which set off controversy because the exhibition fails to depict Japan’s wartime atrocities or aggression.
