A veteran educator from Ohio has been chosen to head the Cal State Northridge College of Education.

Philip Rusche, dean of the College of Education and Allied Professions at the University of Toledo since 1983, will assume his new duties Aug. 1.

Rusche, 60, will succeed Carolyn Ellner, who retired last year after 16 years as dean.

Mary Katherine Tetreault, vice president of academic affairs at Cal State Fullerton, has been interim dean.

“I’m interested in programs that combine academic work with extensive field work in the schools,” Rusche said Tuesday. “Northridge has a strong history and tradition of this, which I look forward to continuing and enhancing.”

While at Toledo, Rusche helped create a dual degree program between the colleges of education and arts and sciences, helped organize the Urban Leadership Development Program with Toledo public schools and headed a capital campaign that raised more than $3 million for the College of Education.

Previously, Rusche was dean of the College of Education at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., associate dean of the College of Education at Northeastern University in Boston, a professor of educational administration and a high school teacher.

He is a member of the board of examiners of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and previously served on the board of directors of the American Assn. of Colleges for Teacher Education.
